Schellig & Varsity Boys Win Crazy Mountain Meet

Junior Auston Schellig leads the race just past the half way point.

Junior Auston Schellig looked to be having fun racing with teammate Senior Jack Cline at the start of the Crazy Mountain Meet in Big Timber Saturday. The smile was replaced by a look of dialed-in determination by the time he came back around the clubhouse, around the 2 mile mark.

He knew he was going to be challenged by Junior Finn Schretenthaler from Park High before race end. Schretenthaler did indeed come on strong in the last mile, in an attempt to overtake Schellig, but Schellig held on for the race win in an exciting uphill finish.

Not only did Schellig earn the individual win over Park High, but the Varsity Boys team also beat Park by a two point margin. Marking the first time Joliet has taken the team title at Crazy Mountain.

Sophomores Justyce Bickel and Addy Bania work together to hold off competitors heading to the finish line.

Cline crossed the line in third place, followed by Senior Adin Matthes in 6th. Senior Grady Nardinger finished in 8th, with an impressive new personal record almost a minute faster than the previous race at Mountain West. Senior Gavin Evertz crossed in 29th, to complete the team score.

Varsity Girls appeared to be showing a bit of fatigue at this meet, but are looking to return strong at their next race, which will be 7 of 7 in Helena on Thursday,

Freshman Tristan Vazquez racing for an impressive new personal record.

JV Boys took 2nd, led by Senior Thorlan Finley. He was followed by Freshman Tristan Vazquez who continues to have an outstanding rookie high school season, shaving another 40 seconds of his PR.

Senior Cloee Blain represented the J-Hawks in the JV girls race with a new season record race performance.

Junior High Boys placed 5th in the meet, with all runners setting new personal records in the 2500m distance. Zale Adams led the way, finishing in 13th place, just ahead of teammate Cole Miller who crossed the line in 14th. Paxton Killion, 18th, and Weston Blain, 20th, also finished top 20 in the race of 99 competitors.

Reagan Long determined to earn a new season record as she nears the finish line.

Only four runners competed for the J-Hawk junior high girls, so they were not scored as a team at this meet. Reagan Long set an impressive new season record in the 60+ mph gusty day.

Varsity is heading to Helena for the 7 of 7 meet Thursday. JV & Junior High will be competing at Pompey's Pillar Friday.
