Schellig Easily Takes Title at Red Lodge Invitational

Junior Auston Schellig leading the pack at the start of the race. Senior Jack Cline (#60) follows close behind.

In Red Lodge Saturday, Junior Auston Schellig led the Varsity boys race off the starting line and never gave up the lead, finishing a minute and 14 seconds ahead of second place, Tre Howe of Lodge Grass. Coming in second for the J-Hawks was Senior Jack Cline in 5th place overall with his best time of the season. Seniors Adin Matthes, Grady Nardinger, and Gavin Evertz also put up their best times of the season, finishing 9th, 14th, and 32nd overall. Sophomore Carter Williams and Senior Thorlan Finley completed the Varsity team.

The top five runners' scores led the J-Hawks to tie Lodge Grass for second place, behind Colstrip, in the predominantly Class B meet.

Varsity girls also performed well, with all three runners putting up their best times of the season and finishing tightly grouped together. Sophomore Sophia Schellig was first to cross the line with a 24:09.67, in 20th place, followed closely by Sophomores Addy Bania in 21st and Justyce Bickel in 26th.

Bania seems to be settling in to her rookie year quite nicely. She shaved 4 minutes and 19 seconds off her time from just two weeks ago, in Billings, and is looking strong as the lady J-Hawks head into the last half of the season.

JV Boys placed 3rd, led by Sophomore Wade Behm in 10th place, running a 21:27.97 and quite possibly earning a spot on the Varsity squad. Also contributing to the third place team finish were Seniors Keith Frank, Junior Rueben Miller, Freshman Tristan Vazquez and Sophomore Oliver Lewis. Freshman Evan Dye set a new personal record, but as the 6th runner was nonscoring for the JV J-Hawks.

Middle School Boys blew the competition away and earned their first team win. Bob Engelke led the way with 9th place, Cole Miller in 15th, Paxton Killion in 16th, Weston Blain in 18th, and Zale Adams in 40th. Every single member of the boys team earned a new personal record at the meet as well.

Middle school girls ran individually at this meet, as there weren't enough runners for a full team, but they still had an outstanding day. Aria Matthes finished in 9th place with a new personal record and teammates Kailee Finley and Reagan Long also set new season records.
